Sending your child off to university is a proud, exciting, and sometimes emotional milestone. After months of revision, exams, and waiting for results, they’ve secured their place — now comes the big move.

As a parent, you want them to start their university journey well-prepared. This university essentials checklist covers everything from kitchen basics to sentimental touches, so you can tick off what they’ll need before Freshers’ Week begins.

University Packing List for Parents

1. Kitchen Basics (uni cooking essentials)

  • A small set of plates, bowls, and cutlery

  • 2–3 mugs and a couple of glasses

  • Frying pan, saucepan, and baking tray

  • Chopping board and sharp knife

  • Can opener, peeler, spatula, and wooden spoon

Parent tip: They don’t need a full dinner set — just the basics to make simple student meals. 

2. Bedroom Comforts (uni bedding checklist)

  • Duvet and pillows (check the bed size — many halls use small doubles)

  • 2–3 sets of bedding and pillowcases

  • Cosy blanket or throw

  • Laundry bag or basket 

3. Bathroom Must-Haves (student bathroom essentials)

  • Bath and hand towels

  • Toiletries (toothpaste, shampoo, soap, deodorant)

  • First aid kit with plasters, pain relief, and cold medicine 

4. Study Supplies (university study essentials)

  • Laptop or tablet (with charger!)

  • Notebooks, pens, and highlighters

  • USB stick or portable hard drive for backups

  • Desk lamp for late-night studying
