Pigeon Appreciation Day: Why These Birds Deserve a Little More Credit

When most people think of pigeons, they probably picture them strutting around town centres looking for dropped chips.

They don't exactly get the same level of admiration as robins, owls or kingfishers.

But with Pigeon Appreciation Day taking place on 13th June, I thought it was only fair to give these often-overlooked birds a little bit of attention.

Pigeons Are More Interesting Than You Might Think

Pigeons have been living alongside humans for thousands of years and have played an important role throughout history.

Long before mobile phones and emails existed, pigeons were used to carry messages over long distances thanks to their incredible ability to find their way home. Some even played a role during wartime, delivering important messages when other forms of communication weren't possible.

Not bad for a bird that's often dismissed as a nuisance.

They Get a Bad Reputation

Let's be honest, pigeons don't have the best image.

They're often referred to as "city birds" and tend to be overlooked in favour of more colourful species. Yet they're incredibly intelligent, loyal and adaptable.

Many people are surprised to learn that pigeons mate for life and are known for their excellent navigation skills.

The more you learn about them, the harder it becomes to dislike them.

A Bird That's Part of Everyday Life

Whether you live in a city, a town or a village, chances are you've spotted a pigeon recently.

They're such a familiar part of everyday life that we often stop noticing them altogether.

Maybe that's why having a day dedicated to appreciating them feels quite fitting.

Celebrating Pigeon Appreciation Day

You don't need to do anything elaborate.

Take a moment to notice the birds around you, learn a few pigeon facts, or simply appreciate how these resilient little birds have adapted to living alongside us.

Sometimes the most ordinary things turn out to be the most interesting when you take a closer look.

For Fellow Pigeon Fans

As someone who loves creating gifts inspired by the things people enjoy, I couldn't resist adding a pigeon keyring to my collection.

It's a small nod to one of Britain's most recognisable birds and seemed the perfect time to share it as we celebrate Pigeon Appreciation Day.

After all, every bird deserves a fan club!
